It’s time for another squad article and this time we have a few new additions to the team. There are now 20-members of this updated roster, and it’s time to find out whether or not the incumbents have kept their spots in the line-up. As before the team will play with a DH and for the time being we will stick to a 3-man pitching rotation. Also remember the stats you see below are indicative of their career averages. So, without further to do let’s begin.

Lineup:

  1. CF. Carl Crawford (.290 AVG) (.330 OBP) (13 HR) (72 RBI) (45 SB)

  2. DH. Ryan Klesko (.279 AVG) (.370 OBP) (26 HR) (92 RBI) (8 SB)

  3. LF. Hideki Matsui (.282 AVG) (.360 OBP) (23 HR) (100 RBI) (2 SB)

  4. RF. Vladimir Guerrero (.318 AVG) (.379 OBP) (34 HR) (113 RBI) (14 SB)

  5. 1B. Dmitri Young (.292 AVG) (.351 OBP) (20 HR) (81 RBI) (3 SB)

  6. 3B. Gary Gaetti (.255 AVG) (.308 OBP) (23 HR) (87 RBI) (6 SB)

  7. C. Sandy Alomar Jr. (.273 AVG) (.309 OBP) (13 HR) (69 RBI) (3 SB)

  8. SS. Garry Templeton (.271 AVG) (.304 OBP) (5 HR) (57 RBI) (19 SB)

  9. 2B. Jim Gantner (.274 AVG) (.319 OBP) (4 HR) (51 RBI) (12 SB)

Bench:

2B/SS. Pokey Reese (.248 AVG) (.307 OBP) (8 HR) (57 RBI) (27 SB)

OF. Wes Swackhamer (.236 AVG) (.287 OBP) (3 HR) (22 RBI) (5 SB) minors

UTIL. Mark Ryal (.211 AVG.) (.245 OBP) (2 HR) (8 RBI) (1 SB)

OF/DH. Ben Oglivie (.273 AVG) (.336 OBP) (22 HR) (83 RBI) (8 SB)

Rotation:

  1. Luis Tiant (15-11) (3.30 ERA) (224 IP) (155 SO) (2.18 K/BB Ratio)

  2. Fernando Valenzuela (13-12) (3.54 ERA) (227 IP) (161 SO) (1.81 K/BB Ratio)

  3. Bryn Smith (12-10) (3.53 ERA) (196 IP) (113 SO) (2.40 K/BB Ratio)

Bullpen:

LHP. Tim Davis (4-4) (4.62 ERA) (91 SO) (1.42 K/BB Ratio) (4 SV)

RHP. Chin-Hui Tsao (5-6) (5.75 ERA) (70 SO) (1.67 K/BB Ratio) (2 SV)

SU. Donn Pall (5-5) (3.63 ERA) (58 SO) (2 K/BB Ratio) (2 SV)

CL. Mark Prior (13-9) (3.51 ERA) (151 SO) (3.36 K/BB Ratio) (0 SV)

Summary:

The squad now has a true leadoff hitter in Carl Crawford, which adds some much-needed speed to the team. However, this meant that someone had to get moved to the bench, and that so happened to be Ben Oglivie. But that doesn’t mean he won’t get playing time he’ll be involved in a DH platoon with Ryan Kelso. Crawford also adds some much-needed defensive ability to go along with Gaetti, Templeton, Gantner, and Alomar.

Mark Ryal can play any position, so he’ll be the UTIL guy that plays once in a while. Oglivie can now be either a pinch hitter or take over for Klesko or Matsui if I pinch run for either of them with Pokey Reese. And Wes Swackhamer can once again make sure that the Gatorade cooler is always filled and ready to go.

The rotation stays the same, with the trio of Tiant, Valenzuela, and Smith but keep any eye out for some additions down the road. Tim Davis and Chin-Hui Tsao have been relieved of their closer and setup roles in favor of a less stressful middle relief position. The new setup man for the team is Don Pall who'll keep the offense off balance with his split-finger, forkball combo. And the new closer is Mark Prior, and while he might not have any experience closing that shouldn’t stop him from being effective. Remember John Smoltz when he moved from a starter to a closer? That’s kind of what I’m going for here, to take stress off what is a fragile arm.

And there you have it, version 2 off the Behind the Cardboard baseball team.
